Collection: Espresso tamper

A tamper is used to compress ground coffee in the portafilter. The most common diameter for a portafilter basket is just over 58 mm, in which case a 57-58 mm tamper is suitable. For those who need to tamp many coffee pucks every day, it can be easier to use a tamper with adjustable pressure that uses a lever to press, or perhaps even a fully electronic one? At our store, you will find tampers for both espresso and coffee. We have also brought together tamping mats and stands that provide a stable surface and protection for your countertop.

How to choose a tamper

Which size tamper fits my machine?

The tamper must match the diameter of your espresso machine's portafilter basket - common sizes are 53, 57, and 58 mm. Measure your portafilter basket or check your machine's specifications if you are unsure.

Manual or automatic tamper?

A manual tamper gives you full control over pressure and angle, but requires some practice to become consistent. An automatic tamper applies the same force every time, which provides more uniform results between cups - especially useful if several people are using the same machine.

What is a levelling tool and do I need one?

A leveling tool evens out the ground coffee in the portafilter basket before tamping, which provides a more even extraction. It is not a requirement, but it can help you get a more consistent result cup after cup.

What is a tamping stand?

A tamper stand keeps the tamper upright and stable on the counter between brews, which protects both the tamper and the countertop and keeps the workspace tidy.
