How to clean your espresso machine

Tommy Winberg

Ongoing cleaning

It is important to keep the machine clean on an ongoing basis to ensure the coffee tastes good. Follow these simple steps and you will serve great coffee all day long.

Coffee grounds

  1. Knock the grounds out of the portafilter when it is quiet
  2. Start the brewing process & rinse the portafilters

Coffee grounds that are left to sit for a long time will burn on, and coffee residue builds up on the outlets the more coffee you brew.

Steam wand

  1. Purge the steam wand both before & after frothing
  2. Wipe the steam wand after frothing

Use a Latte cloth to wipe the steam wand. Polish the machine with a Macchina cloth and Puly Igienic, so that the machine looks fresh and shiny.

Daily cleaning

Cleaning at the end of the day is a must for all cafés and restaurants that want to keep their customers satisfied.

It certainly takes a couple of extra minutes each day, but we guarantee that this prevents problems and difficulties that you might otherwise encounter. Just follow these simple steps for a perfect result.

The steam wand

  1. Mix 2-4 centiliters of Puly Milk Cleaner in a glass of cold water
  2. Turn on the steam for about 10 seconds to heat up the steam wand
  3. Turn off the steam and place the steam wand in the glass with the cleaning liquid

The liquid is sucked into the steam wand and dissolves milk residues that have built up during the day. Perform the same procedure for all steam wands used.

  1. Let the steam wand soak while the other steps are performed
  2. Then remove the cleaning liquid from the steam wands
  3. Purge the steam thoroughly and wipe the steam wand with a Latte cloth

Filter handles (portafilters)

  1. Remove the filters from the portafilters and place them together in a container
  2. Pour 3-4 tablespoons of Puly Caff Plus powder into the container
  3. Fill up with hot water so that the metal parts are completely submerged. Let sit while the other steps are performed.

Brew groups

  1. Brush the brew groups with the cleaning brush around the inner sides to remove coffee residues that have stuck in the brew group
  2. Place a blind filter (filter without holes) in a portafilter
  3. Fill the blind filter with 1 teaspoon of Puly Caff Plus powder and insert the handle into the brew group
  4. Turn the brewing on/off using the manual brew button (or the lever on a manual machine). The brewing only needs to be running for a few seconds to build pressure in the group. Repeat 10-15 times.
  5. Remove the portafilter from the brew group and rinse for 10 seconds or until the water runs clear. Repeat the step for each brew unit.

Finish

  1. Empty the container with portafilters and filters
  2. Rinse all parts thoroughly
  3. Reassemble the filters in the portafilters and place them in the brew groups
  4. Lift out the drip tray for rinsing and wiping in a sink
  5. Wipe off and pour a tablespoon of Puly Caff Plus into the drain cup under the drip tray
  6. Pour a couple of deciliters of hot water over it, which helps maintain the flow in the drain

Done!

Cleaning the espresso grinder

A thorough cleaning of the grinder can make a big difference. Removing built-up coffee residues allows the beans to pass through the grinder more smoothly, and the taste of the coffee improves. These following steps are simple and quick and only need to be done once a week.

Preparations

  1. Close the bean hopper by pushing in the slider.
  2. Grind out all the coffee already present in the grinder housing.
  3. Remove the bean hopper from the grinder and pour the beans into a bowl.

Cleaning

  1. Spray Puly Igienic inside the bean hopper and wipe clean with a Macchina cloth. Then polish with a Barista cloth.
  2. Pour 1-2 bags of Puly Grind or a tablet of Grindz into the grinding mechanism.
  3. Reinstall the bean hopper and fill with beans.
  4. Open the bean hopper and grind out coffee until no more white specks appear in the coffee powder.

Now the grinder is ready to be used again!
